Origins: The Emergence of a Cryogenic Community in India (Pre-1975)

The history of the National Conference on Cryogenics and Superconductivity is deeply intertwined with the evolution of low-temperature science in India. Low temperature research, down to 1 K started in India as early as in 1952, at the National Physical Laboratory when it acquired a Helium liquefier of the first generation (ADL-50). The low temperature culture spread to other institutions like TIFR (1966), IISc and other DAE institution and some IITs around 1975. During 1990s large superconductivity programmes namely fusion reactor SST-1 at IPR, superconducting cyclotron at VECC, superconducting accelerators at TIFR and IUAC. National Physical Laboratory excelled in building several superconducting magnet systems indigenously and started quantum metrology. Research in low-temperature physics, superconductivity, and cryogenic engineering flourished across the country. During the 1960s and 1970s, India's growing engagement with space technology, and superconducting materials necessitated indigenous expertise in cryogenics. Informal workshops, laboratory-level meetings, and specialized training programmes—often supported by pioneers in the field—laid the groundwork for a more formal national platform.

Institutionalisation: Formation of the Indian Cryogenics Council (1975)

A decisive milestone came with the establishment of the Indian Cryogenics Council (ICC) in 1975. The Council was envisioned as a professional body to unify scientists, engineers, & industry stakeholders working in cryogenics & superconductivity across the country. Its objectives included
